The cubed foam facilitates customizing to your equipment.In my case the purpose is to safely transport a camera body, extra lenses and various small accessories. It's just exactly the right size for taking the lenses I want to take while traveling, though not for every lens I will ever own of course. There's a layer of egg crate foam lining the lid, a flat layer of foam in the bottom, and a chunk of cubed foam to fill the space in between. The cubed foam is somewhat compressed when fitted inside the case, so keep in mind that any space you carve out while the foam is removed from the case will be less when the foam is in the case. Getting everything to fit required some thought and planning before starting to carve out the foam. These cases are pre-designed with an inner lip that is designed for mounting a panel. The lip even has screw holes so installation of our control panel is very easy. We tried other well-known cases but we had to secure the faceplate with screws or rivets coming in from the side of the case, compromising its water resistance. These Nanuk cases are built extremely well (even better in our opinion than the "p" brand), the handle is more robust, and the double-action side latches give it the more futuristic look that we desired. Also you can open the latches and fold them all the way open and they "lock" out of the way until you release them. Read more Solid, This review is from: Nanuk 905 Case with Cubed Foam -Black (Camera) After twenty years of being a photographer I realized now I can never have enough cases, bags, etc. After seeing a companion travel with a case like this I was able to get one of my own and I have to say it has me rethinking how I pack and travel. This case is super-solid, like a hard case is, but is also lockable and watertight, two things that come into play, often times, when you least expect it. The foam inside is partially pre-cut allowing you to map out exactly how to fit your delicate and beloved equipment. I also like the fact the hinges on the side require you to press a secondary button before they release, almost like a two-part hinge release on the back of your camera. After using this small case I've decided to look for something larger in the same line. Last week I watched an irate airline passenger pull down a fellow traveler's bag, four or five feet to the airplane floor, something I seem to be seeing more and more these days.
